Fort St George & Heritage Walk
Fort St George stands as the birthplace of modern Chennai and marks the beginning of British presence in India under the Chennai country name. Built in 1639 by the British East India Company, the fort became the foundation around which the Chennai city name, earlier known as Chennai Madras, gradually expanded. Today it remains an important landmark in the Chennai capital of Tamil Nadu. The complex houses St Mary’s Church, one of the oldest Anglican churches in Asia, and the Fort Museum displaying colonial era artifacts, uniforms, coins, and letters. A heritage walk through this area reveals old administrative buildings, bastions, and sea facing walls that once guarded trade routes. The experience offers a strong sense of how colonial history shaped Chennai’s urban identity.
