Gir National Park

Gir National Park is a 1,412-square-kilometer protected forest spread across Gujarat’s Junagadh and Amreli districts. It is globally famous as the last natural habitat of the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica). Once reduced to fewer than 20 lions in the early 20th century, the population has now recovered to more than 670, making it one of the top attractions in Gir National Park. The region was first protected in 1913 by the Nawab of Junagadh to conserve the endangered lions. Later, it was officially declared a national park in 1965. Today, travelers from across the world visit Gir National Park to experience its thriving wildlife and rich ecosystem. One of the most popular things to do in Gir National Park is taking a jeep safari from Sasan Gir, the main tourism hub near the reserve. Full safari drives usually last around three hours and are well known for frequent lion sightings, including chances to spot multiple prides during a single trip. Apart from Asiatic lions, the park is home to one of India’s highest leopard populations. Visitors can also see sloth bears, crocodiles, jackals, and four different antelope species. Birdwatchers can enjoy sightings of more than 300 bird species throughout the forest. Another unique aspect of the Gir National Park is the presence of the Maldhari community. These traditional pastoralists continue to live within the protected forest and graze buffalo herds under regulated conditions, adding a cultural dimension to the wildlife experience. The best time to visit Gir National Park is usually between December and March, when the weather remains pleasant and wildlife sightings are more frequent.
