Shantiniketan

Shantiniketan (“the abode of peace”) is a university town at 56 meters in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, about 160 km north of Kolkata. It is best known as the home of Visva-Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921. As a cornerstone of Shantiniketan tourism, it is deeply tied to Tagore’s cultural and educational philosophy. Originally established as an ashram by Tagore’s father, Debendranath Tagore in 1863, the site was later transformed by Rabindranath Tagore into an open-air school and eventually an international university dedicated to East–West cultural exchange. The campus still reflects this vision; classes conducted under trees, a strong emphasis on arts and crafts, and a non-traditional academic atmosphere that defines the entire experience. Key highlights include the Uttarayan complex, where Tagore’s residences (Udayan, Konark, Shyamali, Punascha, and Udichi) are preserved as museums, making them among the most important places to visit in Shantiniketan. The campus is also home to Kala Bhavana, a renowned art school that has shaped many leading Bengali artists. Shantiniketan’s cultural calendar, especially the Poush Mela in December adds to its significance, while its blend of education, art, and heritage makes it central to any Shantiniketan itinerary.
