Visva-Bharati University
About
Visva-Bharati University was founded in 1921 by Rabindranath Tagore as a center for East–West cultural exchange. As a core highlight of Shantiniketan tourism, it continues to reflect Tagore’s original vision of education in harmony with nature and creativity. Many classes are still conducted outdoors under mango and amaltas trees, while certain departments retain a traditional Bengali ashram-style dress code. The campus experience offers a unique blend of learning and heritage. Visitors can explore the main campus along with the Kala Bhavana, known for murals by Nandalal Bose and other Bengal School artists, as well as Sangeet Bhavana, the university’s music school. The central ashram complex, built around the original chapel, further anchors the cultural landscape of Shantiniketan.
