Dwarka

Dwarka is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites of Hinduism and one of the Sapta Puri seven sacred cities, located on the westernmost tip of the Gujarat coast at just 2 metres above sea level, making it a major centre of Dwarka tourism and Dwarka travel guide itineraries. According to the Mahabharata, Dwarka was the capital of Lord Krishna’s kingdom and is believed to have been submerged into the sea after Krishna’s death, with underwater archaeology discovering submerged stone structures about 30 metres offshore, adding to its importance among the top attractions in Dwarka. The present town is built around the Dwarkadhish Temple, a five storey 16th century structure said to stand on the original shrine founded by Krishna’s great grandson Vajranabha, making it one of the most important places to visit in Dwarka and central to Dwarka sightseeing. Beyond the main temple, Bet Dwarka, a small island about 30 kilometres offshore reached by ferry, has several additional Krishna temples and is a key part of things to do in Dwarka. Dwarka is also associated with the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, located about 15 km away, making it part of an important pilgrimage circuit that includes Somnath Temple and Veraval, and enhancing its significance in Dwarka holidays and Dwarka trip planning.
