Srinagar has been welcoming increasing numbers of tourists in recent years and the tourism infrastructure is well-developed. The Dal Lake area, Mughal Gardens, and major tourist sites are generally safe. Check current travel advisories, avoid political demonstrations, and follow local guidance. Kashmiri hospitality toward guests is deeply ingrained and genuine.
Dal Lake's ornately carved cedar-wood houseboats are a unique Srinagar experience — many dating back to the British era when European visitors were not allowed to buy land, so they built floating homes instead. Houseboats are categorized from deluxe to standard. Most include meals (Kashmiri cuisine), a personal shikara for transport, and views that make you feel you're living inside a painting.
Srinagar is famous for Pashmina shawls (insist on genuine Pashmina with GI tag), Kashmiri carpets (handknotted silk and wool), papier-mâché handicrafts, walnut wood carvings, saffron (buy from reputable shops), dried fruits, and Kashmiri willow cricket bats. Shop at the Polo View Market or government emporia for assured quality.
Wazwan is a multi-course Kashmiri feast of 7 to 36 courses, traditionally served at weddings and celebrations. Key dishes include rogan josh (slow-cooked lamb in aromatic gravy), gustaba (meatballs in yogurt), tabak maaz (fried ribs), yakhni (yogurt-based curry), and seekh kabab. It's prepared by specialist chefs called Wazas and served on large copper plates (traem).

Nishat Bagh lies on the edge of Dal Lake with twelve Mughal-era terraces rising toward the Zabarwan hills. Built in 1633 by Asif Khan, the garden uses gravity-fed water channels, stone cascades, and open sightlines, earning its place on UNESCO’s tentative list.
