Must-visit places and experiences

Ujjayanta Palace was built between 1899 and 1901 by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya as the royal residence of the Manikya dynasty. It is one of the most important places to visit in Agartala, showcasing a Mughal–European hybrid design spread across a 28-hectare estate with Italian-style gardens, grand ceremonial halls, twin water tanks, and a central dome. Now visitors can explore this palace-turned into Tripura State Museum, which displays ethnographic exhibits of Tripura’s 19 tribal communities, royal artefacts, and historical records of the Manikya dynasty. The palace also connects to cultural history, as Rabindranath Tagore visited and served as a court poet, making it a significant stop in things to do in Agartala.

A striking highlight of Agartala tourism is Neermahal Palace, located on Rudrasagar Lake about 50 kilometers from Agartala. Built in 1930 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, this lake palace is a key stop for anyone looking to explore Agartala beyond the city limits. It reflects a unique Hindu–Muslim architectural blend with Rajput, Mughal, and Tripuri influences, similar in concept to Jaipur’s Jal Mahal. Accessible only by motor boat from the lakeside jetty, the palace features 24 rooms, two royal courtyards, and a carefully planned water-garden layout. Now converted into a museum, it displays royal artefacts and remains one of the top attractions in Agartala sightseeing.
