Sonmarg

Thajiwas is a small, accessible glacier 3 kilometres uphill from Sonmarg village. Ponies ferry visitors to the snow line, where meltwater streams rush down from ice cliffs. Visiting it is one of the main things to do in Sonmarg. The glacier is year-round snow at 3,000 metres and the easiest in Sonmarg, Kashmir to reach without trekking.

Zoji La is the 3,528-metre pass on the Srinagar-Leh highway. A drive to zero point Sonmarg at the pass is spectacular, with waterfalls and snow walls. Baltal, a meadow 15 km beyond Sonmarg, serves as the shorter route to the Amarnath cave. Even if not crossing to Ladakh, the drive is one of the best things to do in Sonmarg.

The Sindh River runs through Sonamarg like a bright ribbon of moving ice, cutting between green meadows, rocky edges, and snow-touched peaks. It does not sit still for photos, yet it somehow makes every frame look calmer. In summer, the water looks clear and fast, and the valley around it turns lush and open. In colder months, the riverbanks look sharper and more dramatic, with chilly air and misty views that feel almost cinematic. Most visitors stop here for short riverside walks, quick tea breaks, and scenic photography. The river gives Sonamarg its freshness, and the sound of rushing water stays constant in the background, making even a short stop feel like a proper reset.
