Bharatpur

Bharatpur is a former princely state capital in Rajasthan, located at an elevation of 183 meters and about 55 kilometers west of Agra. Bharatpur tourism is best known for Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage wetland widely regarded as one of the world’s finest bird sanctuaries. Once the private duck-hunting reserve of the Maharaja of Bharatpur, the 29-square-kilometer park is now home to more than 370 bird species, including the once-famous Siberian crane during winter migration. Founded in 1733 by the Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal, the city remains one of the most historically significant places to visit in Bharatpur. At its center stands Lohagarh Fort, the famed “Iron Fort” that withstood multiple British attacks without ever being conquered. The fort complex contains three palaces along with several small museums that highlight the region’s royal history. Beyond the park and fort, Deeg is another major highlight featured in many Bharatpur travel guide itineraries. The town is known for Deeg Palace, an 18th-century royal retreat celebrated for its ornate water gardens and fountains. Visitors who explore Bharatpur can also discover the continuing tradition of Bharatpur miniature painting, with artists still producing works in the classic Jat style.
