Varanasi

The stone ghats lead not just to the water; they give the impression of the city perpetually sliding into the Ganga. Before the sun dispels the mist, you can hear the morning very clearly: the wrestlers' bodies hitting the mud produce a wet thud, a hiss of milk in blackened brass kettles, and the sudden, sharp blast of a conch shell. Inside the maze of alleys, you're pressed against the wet walls and the side of a stubborn cow, getting along past silk looms that click behind blue doors and very small shrines which are no bigger than a kitchen cupboard. At night, the riverfront is orange because of the intense heat of the pyres and aarti lamps; thus, you carry the grit of woodsmoke and the scent of old incense on your skin.

FAQs about Varanasi

Definitely! The ghats and temples are always filled with people, locals and tourists, so you won't often feel alone. Just keep an eye on your belongings as you would in any crowded place. At night, only walk along well- lit main streets, and please make sure you do not take pictures or loud talking at the cremation ghats, okay? Show some respect.

The Aarti takes place every single day at the Dashashwamedh and Assi Ghats. If you plan to come during the busy season which is between October or March, it is suggested that you get there early or find a spot on a boat. Seeing those lamps floating on the river from the water? Pure enchantment.

You can cover the main attractions such as sunrise at Ganges, Kashi Vishwanath temple, the aarti, maybe Sarnath but to be honest, this city gets into your veins. Would you like to lose yourself in those narrow lanes, negotiate for silk, or simply have a cup of tea while watching the craziness from the corner? At least 3, 4 days worth it. You'll see!
