Must-visit places and experiences

The Ridge is Shimla's iconic open space — a wide pedestrian promenade at the heart of the town offering panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges. At its center stands Christ Church, a yellow neo-Gothic landmark built in 1857, and the Tudor-style library building. The Ridge connects to Mall Road, the main artery of Shimla life, lined with colonial-era buildings housing shops, restaurants, and cafes. Cars are banned here, making it India's most pleasant urban walk. On clear days, you can see snow-capped peaks stretching from Kedarnath to the Dhauladhar range.

The Kalka-Shimla Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway that has been chugging through the Himalayan foothills since 1903. The 96 km journey from Kalka (656m) to Shimla (2,076m) traverses 102 tunnels, 800+ bridges, and 919 curves as it climbs through terraced fields, pine forests, and dramatic mountain scenery. The engineering marvel was built by the British to connect their summer capital to the plains, and riding it today feels like traveling through a living museum. The toy train's gentle pace allows you to absorb every twist and tunnel of the Himalayan landscape.
Top activities and experiences

March to June for pleasant summer weather (15-25°C), perfect for families and sightseeing. December to February for snowfall and winter sports. October-November for clear autumn skies. Avoid July-September monsoon season due to landslides and heavy rain.
From Delhi (350 km): Drive via Chandigarh (8-10 hours), take the UNESCO Heritage Toy Train from Kalka (5-6 hours scenic journey), or fly to Shimla's Jubbarhatti airport (limited flights). The Kalka-Shimla toy train is highly recommended for the experience.
Absolutely. The Kalka-Shimla Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 96 km through 102 tunnels, over 800 bridges, and 919 curves. The journey takes 5-6 hours and offers spectacular mountain and valley views. Book the rail car or first class for the best experience.
Kufri (16 km) for snow activities and the Himalayan Nature Park. Mashobra (13 km) for quiet forest walks. Chail (45 km) for the world's highest cricket ground. Naldehra (22 km) for India's oldest golf course. Narkanda (65 km) for apple orchards and skiing.
Shimla gets very crowded during peak seasons May-June summer holidays and Christmas/New Year. Mall Road can feel packed. Visit on weekdays or during shoulder seasons (March-April, September-October) for a more relaxed experience.
