Jammu

The Raghunath Temple complex in the heart of old Jammu is the largest temple complex in northern India, begun by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1835 and completed by his son Ranbir Singh in 1860.It stands as one of the top attractions in Jammu. Seven shrines cluster around the main Raghunath (Rama) temple, with gilded interiors and galleries of deities. The complex is the nucleus of Jammu's old city — narrow lanes lead outward to the Ranbireshwar Temple, Peer Baba shrine, and the old royal bazaar selling gems, ornaments, and Dogri handicrafts.

Bahu Fort, on a cliff across the Tawi river from the old city, is Jammu's oldest surviving structure — a 3,000-year-old fortification credited to Raja Bahu Lochan, rebuilt by Dogra rulers in the 19th century, is one of the top attractions in Jammu. Inside is the Bawey Wali Mata temple and, just below, the attractively landscaped Bagh-e-Bahu garden with an aquarium, both are popular places to visit in Jammu . On the city side, the Mubarak Mandi Palace complex served as the Dogra royal seat from 1710 to 1925 — a sprawl of Rajasthani, Mughal, and European architectural styles now partly housing the Dogra Art Museum with its superb collection of Pahari and Basohli miniature paintings.
