The Vaishno Devi shrine, 50 kilometres north of Jammu and 13 kilometres by foot from the base town of Katra, is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India and among the top attractions in Jammu. The goddess Vaishno Devi is worshipped in three natural rock forms inside a cave at 1,584 metres. Pilgrims ascend on foot, by horse, by palki (palanquin), or by helicopter. The walk up is paved the entire way, with food, medical aid, and rest stops at regular intervals. The Shrine Board maintains one of the best-run pilgrimage logistics in India.
