Satkosia

Satkosia Tiger Reserve is one of India’s most remote and virgin protected areas covering 964 square kilometers of forest in Odisha’s Angul district. It lies along a dramatic 22-kilometer gorge where the Mahanadi River cuts through the Eastern Ghats. The name Sata Kosia comes from the local description of the gorge length (seven kos, where one kos is about 3 km). This rugged landscape forms the heart of the reserve, combining dense mixed-deciduous forest with a river corridor that supports tigers (rare), leopards, elephants, gaurs, mugger and gharial crocodiles, and over 300 bird species. Tourism remains low-impact due to limited infrastructure, including the Satkosia Sands Resort, forest rest houses, and small tent-camp operators. The signature experience is a Mahanadi boat safari through the gorge, where forested cliffs rise on both sides and crocodiles can often be seen basking on sandbanks. This makes it the highlight in any Satkosia trip, offering a wild alternative to more crowded tiger reserves.
