Bishnupur

Bishnupur is a historic town in West Bengal’s Bankura district, located at an elevation of 59 meters and around 140 kilometers west of Kolkata. It served as the capital of the Mallabhum kingdom from the 7th to the 18th centuries and is now widely known for its exceptional terracotta temple heritage. Built by the Malla kings, who ruled the region for over a thousand years, the town is home to nearly 25 major surviving terracotta temples. These red-brick structures are richly carved with detailed scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Krishna mythology. Among the top attractions in Bishnupur, the Rasmancha (1600 CE) stands out as a unique pyramidal terracotta platform used for displaying Krishna idols. There is also the Jorebangla Temple, known for its twin-hut style roof, and the Madanmohan Temple . Beyond its temples, Bishnupur is culturally significant for its traditional crafts and art forms. It is the birthplace of the Baluchari sari, famous for its mythological woven designs, and is also known for Terracotta Dokra metalwork from the Bankura region. The Bishnupur gharana of Hindustani classical music further enriches its cultural identity.
