The Golden Temple, or Sri Harmandir Sahib, is the holiest shrine in Sikhism and one of the most breathtaking religious sites on Earth. The temple sits in the center of the Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar), its upper floors covered in 750 kg of pure gold that shimmers brilliantly in the sun and glows ethereally when illuminated at night. Built in the 16th century and given its golden facade by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century, the temple has four entrances symbolizing openness to all castes and creeds. The continuous kirtan (devotional music) echoing across the water, the devotion of pilgrims performing parikrama (circumambulation), and the massive langar (community kitchen) serving 100,000 free meals daily create an atmosphere of overwhelming spiritual power and human generosity.

Jallianwala Bagh is the memorial garden at the site of the 1919 massacre where British troops under General Dyer opened fire on a peaceful gathering of thousands, killing an estimated 1,000+ men, women, and children in just 10 minutes. The narrow entrance through which panicked crowds tried to escape, the bullet-marked walls still bearing scars, and the Martyrs' Well into which many jumped to escape the bullets are chilling remnants. The memorial, renovated in 2021 with a museum and light-and-sound show, serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of colonial rule and a turning point that galvanized India's independence movement.

Travel guides, tips, and stories
October to March is ideal with pleasant temperatures of 10-25°C. The Golden Temple is especially magical during Guru Nanak Jayanti (November) and Baisakhi (April). Summers (April-June) can exceed 45°C. The monsoon (July-September) is humid but brings fewer crowds.
Absolutely. The Golden Temple welcomes visitors of all faiths and nationalities — this is a core Sikh principle. There is no entry fee. You must cover your head (scarves available free at the entrance), remove shoes, and wash feet in the shallow pool before entering. Photography is allowed in most areas.
The Golden Temple is open 24 hours. Visit before dawn (4-5 AM) for the deeply spiritual Prakash ceremony when the holy book is brought out. Nighttime visits (9-11 PM) are magical with the illuminated temple reflecting in the pool. Early morning and late night have fewer crowds.
Every evening before sunset, the BSF (India) and Pakistan Rangers perform an elaborate flag-lowering ceremony at the Wagah-Attari border crossing. The synchronized high-kicking, gate-slamming ceremony is accompanied by patriotic music and roaring crowds. Arrive 2 hours early for good seats. It's 30 km from Amritsar.
Amritsar is India's food capital. Must-try: Amritsari kulcha with chole at Kulcha Land or Bharawan da Dhaba, butter chicken and dal makhani at Beera Chicken House, Amritsari fish (crispy fried fish) at Makhan Fish, lassi at Ahuja Lassi, and the free langar at the Golden Temple.
