The Golden Temple, or Sri Harmandir Sahib, is the holiest shrine in Sikhism and one of the most breathtaking religious sites on Earth. The temple sits in the center of the Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar), its upper floors covered in 750 kg of pure gold that shimmers brilliantly in the sun and glows ethereally when illuminated at night. Built in the 16th century and given its golden facade by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century, the temple has four entrances symbolizing openness to all castes and creeds. The continuous kirtan (devotional music) echoing across the water, the devotion of pilgrims performing parikrama (circumambulation), and the massive langar (community kitchen) serving 100,000 free meals daily create an atmosphere of overwhelming spiritual power and human generosity.
