Travel guides, tips, and stories

Darjeeling’s weather shifts within hours, making layers essential through the day. Cold mornings, mild afternoons, wind, and mist shape clothing choices across seasons. Light base layers, flexible mid-layers, and wind-blocking outerwear help manage walks, viewpoints, cafés, and open-air travel without constant outfit changes.

October-November and March-May are best. Autumn (October-November) offers the clearest mountain views with Kanchenjunga fully visible. Spring (March-May) brings blooming rhododendrons and pleasant temperatures. Monsoons (June-September) bring heavy rain and clouds obscuring mountain views. Winters (December-February) are cold (0-5°C) but atmospheric.
On exceptionally clear days (usually in autumn/winter), you can see Mount Everest from Tiger Hill, approximately 225 km away. However, the star of the show is Kanchenjunga (3rd highest peak), which dominates the panorama just 74 km away. The sunrise view of Kanchenjunga is Darjeeling's signature experience.
Absolutely. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site operating since 1881. The 2-hour joyride from Darjeeling to Ghum (the highest railway station in India at 2,258m) passes through Batasia Loop a spectacular spiral where the train crosses over itself with Kanchenjunga views throughout.
Darjeeling tea is called the 'Champagne of teas' because of its unique muscatel flavor a natural musky sweetness found nowhere else on Earth, caused by the specific altitude, soil, climate, and the Chinese tea plant variety grown here. There are 87 tea estates, and the best way to appreciate the tea is to visit an estate like Happy Valley or Makaibari for a tour and tasting.
The nearest airport is Bagdogra (90 km, 3-hour drive). New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest major railway station (88 km). The road up from Siliguri/NJP winds through the hills with spectacular views. Alternatively, take the Toy Train from NJP (7-8 hours) for a heritage experience.

Kalimpong in February brings clear mountain views, cool sunny afternoons around 15–18°C, orchid nurseries in bloom, and quiet monastery visits. Deolo Hill and Durpin Dara offer wide views of Kanchenjunga, while Teesta river drives add variety. Boutique homestays, local markets, and peaceful cafés make it ideal for a relaxed Valentine’s trip.
