So, what is special about Auroville? Located 10 km from Pondicherry, Auroville is an international experimental township founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (The Mother) as a place of 'human unity'. Auroville Pondicherry was conceived as a universal town where its 3,300 residents from over 60 nationalities live in harmony. The town’s heart is the Auroville Matrimandir, a massive golden sphere. Spread across 20 sq km of reforested land, its communities focus on organic farming, education, and art. An Auroville stay in one of its guesthouses offers a deep dive, but visitors can access the outer zone freely; there is no general Auroville Pondicherry entry fee for the main visitor area.
