Bundi

Bundi is a small Rajput town in south-east Rajasthan at about 268 metres, located roughly 210 kilometres south-east of Jaipur. It is set within a semi-circular ring of hills, giving the town a natural amphitheatre-like setting that strongly shapes its visual identity. Historically, Bundi served as the capital of the Hada Chauhan Rajputs from 1342 to 1947 and still retains an exceptionally intact medieval character. The hilltop Taragarh Fort dominates the skyline, while the cascading Garh Palace sits below it on the slope. Across the old town, more than 60 stepwells (baoris) are scattered, many still in use, forming one of the densest stepwell landscapes in India and a core highlight of Bundi tourism. The town is also closely associated with Rudyard Kipling, who stayed here in 1887 and is believed to have drawn inspiration from Bundi for parts of Kim. Culturally, Bundi is best known for its miniature painting tradition, the Bundi school of painting, which developed in the 17th-18th centuries and is famous for its vivid colours and forest hunt scenes. Today, modern Bundi remains relatively small and undeveloped, with winding medieval lanes that are largely unchanged. This preserved urban fabric, combined with its forts, stepwells, and artistic heritage, makes Bundi one of the most atmospheric destinations for Bundi sightseeing and heritage travel in Rajasthan.
