Must-visit places and experiences

The largest palace complex in Rajasthan, Udaipur's City Palace stretches 244 meters along the eastern shore of Lake Pichola, rising 30 meters above the waterline. Built over 400 years by successive Maharanas of Mewar, it's a fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture with 11 smaller palaces within its walls. The interiors dazzle — rooms covered entirely in mirror work, colored glass mosaics, miniature paintings, and Chinese and Dutch tiles. From its balconies, the views across Lake Pichola to the Lake Palace and the Aravalli Hills are among India's most iconic.

The heart and soul of Udaipur, Lake Pichola is an artificial freshwater lake created in 1362 AD that gives the city its enchanting character. The lake is home to two island palaces — Jag Niwas (Lake Palace, now a luxury hotel) and Jag Mandir, where Prince Khurram (later Shah Jahan) once took refuge, reportedly inspiring elements of the Taj Mahal. A sunset boat ride on Pichola, with the City Palace glowing on one side and the Aravalli Hills silhouetted on the other, is one of India's most magical experiences.

September to March is the best time. Post-monsoon (September-November) is magical — the lakes are full, the hills are green, and the weather is pleasant. Winters (December-February) are cool and perfect for sightseeing. Summers (April-June) are very hot, exceeding 40°C.
Udaipur has several interconnected artificial lakes built by its rulers for water supply and beauty. The main lakes are Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Udai Sagar, and Swaroop Sagar. Lake Pichola, created in 1362, is the most famous, with the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir sitting on its islands.
