Imphal

Imphal is the capital of Manipur, located at an elevation of 786 meters in the historic Imphal Valley. Known as the cultural heart of the Meitei civilization, the city has been inhabited and ruled by Meitei kings for more than 2,000 years. Today, Imphal tourism attracts visitors interested in history, culture, and the unique heritage of Northeast India. One of the most significant chapters in the city’s history is the Battle of Imphal during World War II, fought between March and July 1944. Japanese forces attempted to invade India through Manipur but were halted after intense fighting. The Imphal War Cemetery honors over 1,600 Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives in the battle and remains one of the most important places to visit in Imphal. Among the top attractions in Imphal is Kangla Fort, the ancient royal seat of the Meitei rulers. Spread across 237 acres in the center of the city, the fort is over 2,000 years old and is a major highlight in any Imphal travel guide. Other important landmarks include Shri Govindajee Temple, the principal temple of the former royal family, and Ima Keithel, the famous all-women market run by more than 4,000 female traders for generations. Additional things to do in Imphal include visiting the Manipur State Museum and taking excursions to Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India, or the scenic hill town of Ukhrul. The best time to visit Imphal is from October to March when the weather is cool and comfortable for sightseeing.
