Chettinad

Chettinad is a cultural region of around 75 villages in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district, located roughly 400 kilometres south-west of Chennai. It is the historical homeland of the Nattukottai Chettiars, a merchant banker community that built vast trading networks across Burma, Malaya, Ceylon, and Vietnam during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The wealth generated through overseas trade was invested back into their ancestral villages, resulting in some of the most extraordinary residential architecture in India. The grand Chettiar mansions lining the streets of Karaikudi, Kanadukathan, Athangudi, and surrounding villages feature ornate interiors with Burmese teak pillars, Italian marble, Belgian glass, Athangudi tiles, and intricately carved wooden ceilings. Many homes contain more than 100 rooms and combine traditional Tamil layouts with European decorative influences, making them central to Chettinad tourism and heritage travel. Although numerous mansions now stand partially abandoned as families moved to larger cities over generations, several have been carefully restored and converted into boutique heritage hotels, allowing visitors to experience the scale and elegance of Chettinad domestic architecture firsthand. The region is equally renowned for its cuisine, with Chettinad cuisine considered one of India’s finest regional food traditions. Known for bold spice blends, slow cooked meat dishes, and the use of ingredients such as Kalpasi, the cuisine forms a major part of the Chettinad travel guide experience.
