Dawki

The Umngot River is one of the top attractions in Dawki, famous for its extraordinary water clarity. During calm winter days, the pebbled riverbed remains visible through 3 to 4 meters of water, creating the illusion of boats floating in mid-air above the river surface. Traditional Khasi wooden boats operate from the Dawki jetty, with rides lasting between 1 and 2 hours across the river’s most scenic stretches. The river flows through a narrow limestone gorge surrounded by dense forest on both sides, while the India-Bangladesh border bridge adds to the picturesque landscape. Boating on the Umngot River offers a peaceful way to experience the region’s natural beauty and crystal-clear waters. The best time to visit Dawki for this experience is between December and February, when the river is at its clearest and visibility is at its best.

The Dawki Suspension Bridge is a British-era steel bridge built in 1932 across the Umngot River. Once the main road crossing between India and Bangladesh, the bridge now serves as a pedestrian and border-crossing point. Standing around 40 meters above the river, the structure is known for its original riveted construction and historic design. Walking across the bridge offers panoramic views of the crystal-clear Umngot River and surrounding hills, making it one of the most scenic places to visit in Dawki.
