Ellora Caves is home to its most extraordinary masterpiece, the Kailasa Temple, widely regarded as the world’s largest monolithic rock excavation. This complete Hindu temple measures about 50 meters in length, 33 meters in width, and 30 meters in height, and it was carved top-down from a single massive rock formation. Commissioned by Rashtrakuta king Krishna I, the temple was constructed between approximately 756 and 900 CE. It is believed that nearly 200,000 tons of stone were removed during its creation, a process that took more than 150 years to complete. This makes it one of the most ambitious architectural achievements ever attempted in human history. The entire structure is covered in intricate carvings from base to top. At the foundation, sculpted elephants appear to support the temple, symbolizing strength and stability.
