Sindhudurg Fort was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji in 1667 on a 48-acre island just offshore from Malvan, as a base for the Maratha navy against Portuguese and English merchant fleets. The fort is reached by a 15-minute boat ride from Malvan jetty. Inside are the Shivaji Temple (with what is said to be the only palm-and-footprint impressions of Shivaji), a freshwater well within the salt sea, and 42 bastions along the perimeter walls. The fort has been lightly restored but retains much of its 17th-century character.

What makes this place special

A stone slab inside the fort's Shivaji Temple said to bear the impressions of Shivaji's palm and foot and is considered the only such relics in India.

42 bastions run along the 3-km perimeter wall which is where the western side faces the open Arabian Sea, with cannons still mounted at several positions.
