Umaid Bhawan Palace rises above Jodhpur like a golden sandstone ship anchored on a hill. Built in the 20th century during the reign of Maharaja Umaid Singh, the palace blends Indo-Saracenic design with a strong Art Deco mood in its interiors. It still functions in three parts: a royal residence, a luxury hotel, and a museum that opens sections of the palace to visitors. The museum visit feels surprisingly intimate for such a grand structure. You move through galleries that display clocks, furniture, photographs, and royal memorabilia, and you get a clear sense of how modern-era royalty in Rajasthan lived with both tradition and global influence. The surrounding gardens and the palace’s sheer scale make it one of Jodhpur’s most photogenic landmarks, especially in late afternoon light when the sandstone turns warm and honey-like.
What makes this place special

The 32 m central dome rises above a circular marble hall used for receptions and weddings. The Art Deco detailing, the geometric inlay on the floor, and the proportions of the space are remarkable for a building completed in the 1940s. Visible from the museum section.

A separate hangar at the back of the palace displays the Maharaja's pre-Independence vintage car collection including the 1947 Rolls-Royce Phantom, several 1930s Buicks, and a Daimler. Each car carries the Marwar royal insignia and is maintained in working condition by the palace estate.
