Kolaba Fort in Alibaug is a 17th-century sea fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji in 1680 as a base for the Maratha navy. Set on a small rock 2 kilometres off the Alibaug shore, it is accessible at low tide by a walk across the sand; at high tide it appears to float on the sea. Inside are ruined temples (including a Ganesh temple still actively worshipped), freshwater wells within the salt sea (an unusual feature), and ramparts with cannons.

What makes this place special

A still-active Ganesh shrine inside the fort, one of the few actively worshipped temples set within a sea fort.

Two wells inside the fort yield fresh water despite being surrounded by salt sea which is an unusual feature that historically supported the garrison.
