Hiking to Cheri Monastery

Hiking to Cheri Monastery

4.83-4 hoursThimphu

Hiking up the steep, forested trail to Cheri Monastery feels like a deep step into the spiritual heart of the Bhutanese Himalayas. Established in 1620, this was the very first monastery founded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan. The trail crosses a beautiful, traditional wooden cantilever bridge over the rushing Thimphu Chhu River before winding upward through thick, moss-draped oak and rhododendron forests decorated with colorful prayer flags.

What makes it fascinating is the absolute serenity of the climb. As you ascend, the sounds of the valley below fade away, replaced by the wind rustling through the pines and the occasional clanging of a distant prayer bell. At the top, the ancient stone structures cling dramatically to the sheer cliff face, offering a quiet sanctuary where you can sit and meditate with resident monks.

One fun fact people love:

Wild mountain goats (gorals) live peacefully around the monastery cliffs, completely unafraid of humans due to the sacred, non-violent environment maintained by the monks.
