Elephant Falls is a three-tiered waterfall located about 12 km from Shillong. The falls were named after an elephant-shaped rock that once stood nearby (destroyed in a 19th-century earthquake), and today paved pathways and viewing platforms provide access to all three tiers, making it an easy addition to any Shillong itinerary. Close by, Shillong Peak rises to 1,961 meters, the highest point in the region. It offers sweeping 360-degree views across the Khasi Hills, along with a small Khasi shrine at the summit. On clear days, the view extends as far as Bangladesh making it one of the most scenic places to visit in Shillong.

What makes this place special

At Elephant Falls, the water cascades down in three distinct tiers, each accessible via well-built viewing platforms making it one of the most visitor-friendly natural spots in Shillong tourism. The falls are at their most impressive in the post-monsoon period, especially in October, when water flow is strong and the surrounding greenery is at its peak. This makes it a prime highlight in any Shillong travel guide.
