About

Shaniwar Wada was the seat of the Peshwas from 1732 to 1818, the massive stone walled palace complex that was the capital of the Maratha Empire at its height and remains one of the top attractions in Pune often highlighted in any Pune tourism or Pune travel guide. Originally a multi storey residence with 1,000+ rooms, fountains, and ornate courts, the palace was destroyed by a devastating 1828 fire that left only the outer walls, foundations, and seven main gates, yet it continues to be among the most important places to visit in Pune. The ruins are still impressive and form a key part of Pune sightseeing, the massive Delhi Gate with its spiked iron clad doors, the central foundation stones marking the former Durbar Hall, and the extensive gardens now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The site has acoustic connections to Peshwa dynasty assassinations and is said to be haunted, making it a compelling stop for those planning a Pune trip, exploring things to do in Pune, or booking Pune tour packages and Pune holidays, especially during the best time to visit Pune when conditions are ideal to visit Pune and explore nearby Pune hotels and heritage sites.
