Strolling the Historic Villa Round

Walking the famous Villa Round feels less like a standard tourist hike and more like stepping straight back into the height of the 19th-century British Raj. The moment you step off the main market road and enter this heavily shaded, perfectly paved loop that wraps entirely around the central cantonment, the city noise instantly vanishes. It feels pristine, military-grade clean, and effortlessly elegant.

What makes it highly interesting is the sheer architectural and natural harmony of the path. Flanked by towering, ancient pine trees on one side and sweeping, edge-of-the-mountain views of the plains on the other, the loop was originally designed exclusively for royal families and British officers to take leisurely horse and carriage rides. Today, when you take a slow, quiet walk under the massive green canopy, breathing in the sharp, woody scent of pine needles, you can actually imagine the regal history of this pristine hill station unfolding right beneath your feet.

One fun fact people love:

Because the Villa Round perfectly circles the absolute peak of the Nahan hill, on a completely clear day, you can actually spot the sprawling urban grid of Chandigarh shimmering in the distant plains from the southern viewpoints.

Where in Nahan is it?

It wraps entirely around the uppermost military cantonment and the historic royal palace estate, located right in the absolute center of Nahan town.

How to reach:

A simple walk from the Chaugan (the main central ground) or Mall Road will instantly connect you to the starting points of the round.
Strongly avoid trying to drive a car onto the loop; it is strictly a pedestrian and military-regulated pathway.

Best time to visit:

Year-round, as the massive, dense pine canopy provides deep, cooling shade even during the absolute peak of the summer months.

Best time of day:

Go either:
Early morning around 6:30 AM to walk alongside local residents and military joggers
or
Late evening around 5:00 PM to catch the spectacular, golden sunset views dipping below the plains.

Entry fee:

There is absolutely no entry fee. It is a fully public, open walking pathway.

Commute difficulty:

Very easy. It is a completely flat, perfectly paved, circular walking track with zero steep inclines.

Things nobody tells you about this place:

  • It is a highly regulated military zone.
  • Because it borders active cantonment areas, certain sections have strict "No Photography" signs. You must respect these borders at all times.
  • Combine it with a Mall Road dessert.
  • This is the real hack. Do not just finish the circle and go back to your room. Pair the crisp evening walk with a piping hot plate of gulab jamuns or jalebis from the legendary sweet shops nearby.
  • The air temperature drops violently.
  • A lot of people walk in wearing t-shirts. Remember, the deep pine shade completely blocks the sun, making the pathway surprisingly chilly even on a warm afternoon.
  • It empties out incredibly early at night.
  • Because of occasional leopard sightings in the surrounding forests, locals generally avoid walking the lonely, unlit stretches of the round after 8:30 PM.
