About

Perched dramatically atop a rocky hill overlooking the Indus River, Stakna Monastery is one of Ladakh's most scenic and underrated monasteries. Located about 25 kilometers from Leh, the monastery derives its name from the hill on which it stands, which resembles the nose of a tiger when viewed from a distance. In Ladakhi, "Stak" means tiger and "Na" means nose, giving the monastery its distinctive identity. Founded in the late 16th century by the Bhutanese scholar and saint Chosje Jamyang Palkar, Stakna Monastery belongs to the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Its strategic hilltop location provides commanding views of the fertile Indus Valley, making it both a spiritual sanctuary and a remarkable viewpoint. Unlike some of Ladakh's larger monasteries, Stakna offers a quieter and more intimate atmosphere. Visitors can wander through peaceful courtyards, prayer halls, and monastery rooms adorned with Buddhist murals, sacred statues, ancient scriptures, and traditional artwork. The monastery's serene setting allows travelers to experience monastic life without the larger crowds often found at more famous sites. The surrounding landscape is equally captivating. Green fields, poplar groves, traditional villages, and the winding Indus River create a striking contrast against the rugged mountains that define Ladakh's terrain. Whether you're interested in photography, Buddhist culture, or simply enjoying panoramic Himalayan scenery, Stakna Monastery offers one of the most rewarding stops in the Indus Valley.
