The Gandikota Gorge is the dramatic stretch where the Pennar river slices through the Erramala Hills, forming the famed Gandikota canyon. This 300 foot deep and nearly 180 metre wide gorge of layered red sandstone is often compared to the American Grand Canyon. From the edge of Gandikota fort, several viewpoints overlook the river far below, offering sweeping panoramas that reward the long Hyderabad to Gandikota journey. The most striking vantage point is a rock ledge directly in front of the Jamia Masjid, where the scale of the cliffs becomes fully apparent. Visitors often plan their visit around Gandikota timings to catch the best light conditions.
