Kangra Fort, about 20 km from Dharamshala, features in every Dharamshala travel guide. Dating back to early historical records, it stands above the Baner and Manjhi rivers and has seen sieges by Mahmud of Ghazni, Muhammad of Ghor, and the Mughals. Though partly damaged in the 1905 Kangra earthquake, its walls, the Ambika Devi Temple, and a small museum remain, are among the most atmospheric places to visit in Dharamshala.

What makes this place special

At Kangra Fort, a sequence of seven massive gates forces a gradual ascent, each one narrower and more heavily defended than the last.

At Kangra Fort, the central courtyard once received Mughal and Sikh rulers. It has been partly damaged by time and earthquakes, yet still retaining original carved panels, making it one of the key places to visit in Dharamshala.
