Prag Mahal is a striking 19th century royal palace in Bhuj, built between 1865 and 1879 by Rao Pragmalji II in an unusual Italian Gothic architectural style. Designed by British architect Henry Saint Clair Wilkins, the structure stands out in Gujarat for its European influences combined with royal Indian ambition. The palace features massive Corinthian columns, pointed Gothic arches, and a prominent 45 metre clock tower that includes a spiral staircase which visitors can climb for views of Bhuj. Despite suffering heavy damage during the 2001 earthquake, parts of the palace have been restored. Today, the main Darbar Hall and the clock tower are open to visitors, making it one of the most distinctive highlights of Bhuj tourism, especially for those interested in heritage architecture and Bhuj sightseeing.

At Prag Mahal, the 45 metre clock tower is one of the most striking features, rising above the palace with a 167 step spiral staircase leading to the top. The tower houses a period appropriate English mechanical clock, and from the summit visitors get wide views across the rooftops of Bhuj, making it one of the most distinctive viewpoints in the city’s heritage landscape.

At Prag Mahal, the Darbar Hall (audience hall) reflects a dramatic 19th century Rajput colonial interior style, combining royal Indian aesthetics with European influence. The space features massive Victorian chandeliers hanging from high ceilings, along with stuffed animal trophies that were historically displayed as symbols of power and prestige. Although the palace was heavily damaged in the 2001 earthquake, parts of the hall have been carefully restored. Today, visitors can still experience its grand scale, ornate detailing, and the unusual blend of Gothic architecture with princely-era interior design, making it one of the most memorable highlights of Bhuj tourism and heritage exploration in Bhuj.
