About

Daulatabad Fort, located 16 kilometers from Aurangabad, is one of the most impressive medieval fortifications featured in any Aurangabad travel guide. Built atop a 200-meter-high conical hill, the fort was once considered virtually impregnable and remains one of the most fascinating places to visit in Aurangabad for history enthusiasts. Its extraordinary defensive design includes a moat, seven successive gates, a 30-meter-deep dry moat crossed only by a retractable bridge, and a single narrow passage with a sharp right-angle turn that could be defended by just a handful of soldiers. Among the most intriguing episodes connected to the fort is Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq’s decision in 1327 to make Daulatabad the capital of the Delhi Sultanate, forcing the population of Delhi to relocate here in a massive and ultimately failed experiment abandoned within a few years. Today, the fort is regarded as one of the top attractions in Aurangabad tourism.

A pitch-dark winding passage carved through solid rock near the summit is one of the most ingenious defensive features of Daulatabad Fort and among the most unusual things to do in Aurangabad. Designed to confuse and trap invading armies, the narrow corridor could be defended with ease, adding to the fort’s reputation as one of the most formidable military structures and top attractions in Aurangabad tourism.

A partially ruined tower at the summit marks the highest point of Daulatabad Fort and offers sweeping views across the Deccan plateau.
