Visit Jhari Falls
Hidden amidst the coffee estates and forests of the Western Ghats, Jhari Falls, also known as Buttermilk Falls, is one of the most scenic waterfalls near Chikkamagaluru. Cascading from a height of around 50 metres (160 feet), the waterfall gets its nickname from the frothy white appearance of the water as it tumbles over dark rocks, resembling flowing buttermilk.
The journey to Jhari Falls is part of the experience. Visitors travel through winding plantation roads lined with coffee bushes, silver oak trees, and mist-covered hills before reaching the viewpoint. The final stretch often involves a jeep ride, adding a sense of adventure to the visit.
During the monsoon and post-monsoon months, the waterfall comes alive with tremendous force, creating a spectacular sight against the lush green backdrop. The surrounding forests echo with the sound of rushing water, making it one of the most refreshing natural attractions in the region.
Unlike some waterfalls that are visible only from a distance, Jhari Falls allows visitors to get close enough to feel the cool spray and appreciate the scale of the cascade. The area is also popular with photographers, nature lovers, and travellers looking to escape crowded tourist spots.

What Most Visitors Don't Know
Jhari Falls lies within a private coffee estate region, which is why access often involves local jeep operators. The waterfall is fed by streams originating from the Baba Budangiri hills, helping it maintain flow for much of the year. Early mornings often bring mist drifting across the valley, creating a completely different atmosphere from the busier afternoon hours.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is July to January, when rainfall and post-monsoon water flow create the most dramatic views. September to December offers the perfect combination of full water flow, green landscapes, and pleasant weather.
Traveller Tips
- Visit early in the morning for fewer crowds and better photography.
- Wear footwear with good grip as rocks can be slippery.
- Carry a light rain jacket during the monsoon season.
- Be prepared for a jeep ride on rough estate roads.
- Avoid getting too close to fast-flowing water during peak monsoon months.
Standing before Jhari Falls, surrounded by coffee estates, mountain air, and the sound of water crashing through the valley, it's easy to understand why many travellers consider it one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Chikkamagaluru.
