What to expect
The history of Chèvreloup is intertwined with that of the park and the Palace of Versailles. At the end of the 17th century, on the orders of Louis XIV, the hamlet and its lands were included in the park to extend the hunting grounds and divert the water flowing there to benefit the palace ponds.
The National Museum of Natural History took possession of this estate at the beginning of the 20th century to develop plant collections complementary to those of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. These first botanical plantations were organized according to a vast French-style plan. Then, from the 1960s, new areas of the park were developed into a scientific arboretum based on a natural planting plan.
