If you’ve seen a photo of the Taipei 101 looming over the city, it was likely taken from here. Elephant Mountain is the most popular trail in the city, consisting mostly of steep stone stairs that lead to several viewing platforms. It is part of the "Four Beasts" mountains and offers the quintessential Taipei skyline view.
The hike is short but steep, making it a favorite for both tourists and locals looking for a quick workout. At the top, giant boulders provide the perfect (though competitive) spot for photos. The contrast between the dense jungle foliage and the modern cityscape below is stunning.
One fun fact people love:
The trail is illuminated at night, making it one of the few places in the city where you can safely "night hike" to see the city lights and Taipei 101 glowing in the dark.
Where in Taipei is it?
Xinyi District, at the end of the Red MRT Line (Xiangshan Station).
Best time of day:
One hour before sunset. This allows you to see the city in daylight, enjoy the golden hour, and see the skyscraper light up at night.
