Castillo de San Marcos National Monument
About
The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, constructed by the Spanish between 1672 and 1695 to protect their treasure fleets. Built out of a rare, shock-absorbing limestone called coquina (composed of ancient broken shells), the fort successfully withstood multiple British sieges without ever being captured in battle. Today, it stands as a dramatic waterfront monument offering spectacular views of the Matanzas Bay and a deep window into colonial military history.
