Tucked deep within the damp, oak-forested hills of Sintra sits the Convent of the Capuchos, a Franciscan monastery built in complete harmony with the natural environment. Built in 1560, this tiny, humble complex stands in stark contrast to the luxurious, gilded palaces of the royal family nearby. The monks lived lives of extreme poverty and spiritual reflection, carving their tiny living spaces directly out of massive granite boulders and lining the low-ceilinged rooms with cork for insulation.
What makes it fascinating is the organic way the architecture blends into the moss-covered rocks and old-growth trees, making the entire convent look as if it grew naturally out of the forest floor.
