Hiking the Kapuzinerberg

Hiking the Kapuzinerberg

4.72-3 hoursSalzburgAdventure

Climbing the steep, forested pathways of the Kapuzinerberg hill rewards you with a peaceful escape and the most beautiful, iconic views of Salzburg's old town. Rising directly from the eastern bank of the Salzach River, this mountain-like park is covered in dense beech forests and historic stone walls. Walking along the trails, you pass a historic Capuchin monastery, ancient defensive bastions, and quiet viewpoints that overlook the rushing river and the spires of the city below.

What makes this hike fascinating is the feeling of complete forest isolation right in the middle of a busy European city. Within minutes of leaving the shopping streets, the urban noise fades away, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the song of wild birds. It is a favorite local spot for morning jogs, quiet walks, and capturing spectacular photographs of the Hohensalzburg Fortress rising over the old town rooftops.

One fun fact people love:

The Kapuzinerberg is home to a small colony of wild chamois (alpine mountain goats) that live completely undisturbed in the high forest cliffs of the hill.

Where in Salzburg is it?

The main trailhead starts from the Linzer Gasse shopping street, situated just across the river from the historic old town.

How to reach:

Easily walkable from the city center; simply head to the stone archway entrance on Linzer Gasse and follow the paved, climbing path.

Best time to visit:

April to October when the trails are dry, clear of snow, and comfortable for trekking.

Best time of day:

Late afternoon around 5:30 PM to reach the scenic Franziskischlössl bastion in time to watch the golden sunset light illuminate the fortress.

Entry fee:

Completely free of charge to access the hill, use the hiking trails, and enjoy the viewpoints.

Commute difficulty:

Challenging; the initial climb is exceptionally steep and paved with cobblestones, requiring good walking shoes and basic physical stamina.

Things nobody tells you about this place:

  • The main entry path, the Stefan-Zweig-Weg, is very steep at the beginning, but it flattens out into comfortable gravel forest trails once you reach the top ridge.
  • There is a small, rustic restaurant located inside the historic Franziskischlössl castle at the top, offering cold drinks and traditional Austrian snacks.
  • You will walk past several historic stations of the cross, decorated with beautiful seventeenth-century stone sculptures, along the climbing path.
