Climbing the rugged, tussock-covered slopes of Ben Lomond offers one of the most physically demanding and rewarding alpine hikes in New Zealand. The trail climbs steadily from the town center through thick pine forests before opening onto a windswept alpine ridge that leads to the 1,748-meter peak, rewarding you with 360-degree views of the Southern Alps and Lake Wakatipu.
Standing at the summit, surrounded by the vastness of the Otago highlands, you can see the entire Wakatipu basin stretch out below you like a giant blue ribbon.
One fun fact people love:
The peak of Ben Lomond was named after the famous Scottish mountain of the same name by early shepherd Duncan McAdie who explored the region in the 1860s.
Where in Queenstown is it?
Located directly behind Queenstown, starting from either the Tiki Trail or the top of the Skyline Gondola.
How to reach:
Walk up the Tiki Trail from the Gondola base station, or ride the Gondola to the top to bypass the first steep 450 meters of the climb.
Best time to visit:
December to April when the trail is free of deep snow, ice, and alpine winter hazards.
Best time of day:
At dawn around 6:00 AM to complete the steep, exposed climb before the intense midday southern sun hits.
Entry fee:
Completely free to hike the track; gondola tickets are extra if you choose to shorten the climb.
Commute difficulty:
Challenging; a steep, unpaved alpine trail requiring excellent physical fitness, sturdy footwear, and a head for heights near the narrow summit ridge.
Things nobody tells you about this place:
- The final push from the saddle to the summit is exceptionally steep and features loose gravel (scree) that requires careful footwork.
- There is absolutely no shade or drinking water on the open alpine ridges; carry at least 2 liters of water and a high-SPF sunscreen.
- The wind at the summit can be violent and icy cold, even on a scorching summer day; pack a high-quality windbreaker and a warm beanie.
