Climbing the narrow, winding spiral staircase of the Clérigos Tower is a thrilling physical challenge that rewards you with the ultimate panoramic view of Porto. Designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni and completed in 1763, this landmark Baroque bell tower stands 75 meters tall. Visitors squeeze through the tight stone passage, climbing 225 steps past the heavy bronze bells to emerge onto a high, windswept viewing platform overlooking the orange-tiled rooftops, the river, and the distant ocean.
What makes it special is the perspective it offers on Porto’s unique topography, allowing you to see how the city dramatically slips down the steep granite hills toward the Douro River.
One fun fact people love:
During the 18th century, the Clérigos Tower was the tallest structure in all of Portugal and was used as a reliable navigation landmark by ships sailing into the Douro River.

Things nobody tells you about this place:
- The spiral staircase is incredibly narrow, which can trigger claustrophobia; you will have to pause in small alcoves to let people pass coming from the opposite direction.
- If you visit during the top of the hour, the massive bells can ring unexpectedly, which is incredibly loud when you are standing inside the tower.
- There is a beautiful, grassy garden area right next to the tower (Jardim das Oliveiras) that sits on top of a modern shopping complex perfect for a post-climb coffee.
