Hiking through Avakas Gorge

Hiking through the towering stone walls of Avakas Gorge is a thrilling adventure that showcases the wild, untamed nature of western Cyprus. Carved over thousands of years by a steady stream, this spectacular limestone canyon features sheer rock walls that rise up to thirty meters high, slowly closing in until they are just a few meters apart. Walking along the shaded riverbed, you climb over smooth boulders, step across running streams, and walk beneath giant rocks wedged between the cliffs.

What makes this trek fascinating is the unique microclimate inside the gorge. The air is cool, moist, and filled with the scent of wild herbs, fig trees, and rare ferns that cling to the wet stone walls. It is a sensory-rich hike where the sound of trickling water and wild birds echoes off the cliffs, offering a dramatic escape from the sunny beaches.

One fun fact people love:

Avakas Gorge is home to the extremely rare centaurea akamantis, an endangered wild plant with purple flowers that grows only on the sheer cliff faces of this specific canyon.

Where in Paphos is it?

Located on the western edge of the Akamas Peninsula, roughly twenty kilometers north of central Paphos.

How to reach:

Accessible by driving north past Coral Bay to the entrance of the Akamas region, where a dirt road leads to the start of the hiking trail.

Best time to visit:

Spring and autumn when the temperatures are comfortable and the stream water level is low and safe for walking.

Best time of day:

Early morning around 8:30 AM to hike in the cool shade and spot local mountain goats climbing on the high cliffs.

Entry fee:

Completely free of charge to enter the national park and hike the trail.

Commute difficulty:

Moderate; the trail is unpaved, wet, and rocky, requiring sturdy hiking shoes with good grip and a basic level of physical balance.

Things nobody tells you about this place:

  • The rocks inside the gorge can be incredibly slippery due to moss and running water, so avoid wearing sandals or flip-flops.
  • Do not enter the gorge during or immediately after heavy rainfall, as flash floods can occur quickly and loose stones can fall from the high cliffs.
  • The trail gets narrower and more challenging the deeper you go, so you can choose to turn back at any point if the scrambling becomes too difficult.
