The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, known locally as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is the spiritual heart of Kandy. It houses a relic believed to be a tooth of Lord Buddha, making it one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. The temple complex sits beside Kandy Lake, with white walls and golden roofs that glow during evening rituals. Inside, the atmosphere is intense yet orderly. Devotees dressed in white carry lotus flowers, drums echo through the halls during prayer times, and the scent of incense fills the air. The relic itself is kept inside a series of ornate golden caskets and is not directly visible, but the experience of witnessing the ritual offering is powerful.

What makes this place special

Traditional drumming and chanting during prayer times create a deeply immersive spiritual experience.

The temple’s upper section shines against the surrounding hills and lake, especially beautiful at dusk.

Exhibits that explain the relic’s history and its importance in Sri Lankan monarchy and religion.
