Scuba Diving at Nemo Reef

Taking your first underwater breath at Nemo Reef is a life-changing experience that introduces you to the magical world of scuba diving. Located in a sheltered, shallow bay near Govind Nagar Beach, Nemo Reef is widely considered the absolute best site in India for beginner divers and those undertaking Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) programs. The reef features exceptionally calm, swimming-pool-like conditions with a flat sandy bottom and gradual depth, making it incredibly comforting for nervous first-time divers.

What makes diving here so spectacular is the immediate abundance of marine life in very shallow water. Within minutes of submerging, you will find yourself surrounded by colorful damselfish, inquisitive clownfish (Nemo) hovering near their sea anemones, camouflaged octopus, and beautiful sea horses. Professional dive instructors guide you one-on-one, ensuring you feel completely safe and relaxed as you float weightlessly through the clear, warm water.

One fun fact people love:

Nemo Reef is home to several distinct species of anemonefish, allowing divers to spot multiple real-life "Nemos" and "Marvins" living in their natural host anemones just meters from the shore.

Where in Havelock Island is it?

Located on the eastern coast of the island, adjacent to Beach No. 2 (Govind Nagar Beach), close to the main dive shops.

How to reach:

Easily reached by scooter, auto-rickshaw, or a short walk from most dive centers located along the Govind Nagar beach road.

Best time to visit:

October to April when the dry winter weather ensures excellent underwater visibility and calm, current-free seas.

Best time of day:

Early morning around 7:30 AM when the winds are low, the sea is flattest, and marine life is highly active feeding on the reef.

Entry fee:

A beginner shore dive experience costs approximately 3,500 to 4,500 INR per person, which includes all gear rentals, training, and underwater photos/videos.

Commute difficulty:

Easy; the dive starts as a shore walk directly from the beach, requiring no deep-water boat boarding or complex transits.

Things nobody tells you about this place:

  • You do not need to know how to swim to experience a Discover Scuba shore dive, as your instructor holds your tank and controls your buoyancy the entire time.
  • Avoid flying on a commercial airplane within 12 to 18 hours after your dive to prevent decompression sickness, so plan your dive days accordingly.
  • Do not apply heavy chemical sunscreens right before entering the water, as the chemicals can wash off and damage the delicate coral reef.
