Stepping into the peaceful, ruined stone palaces of the Kuskuam complex offers a quiet and contemplative look at imperial Ethiopian life away from the tourist crowds. Built on a hillside just outside the city by the powerful Empress Mentewab in the 18th century, this historic site features a royal palace, a banqueting hall, and a round church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The quiet ruins are surrounded by wild olive trees and wildflowers, giving the site a romantic, untouched feel.

The experience is highly peaceful, allowing you to wander through the crumbling stone archways and historic chambers accompanied only by the sound of birds and the wind.

One fun fact people love:

Empress Mentewab retreated to this hill palace to escape the busy politics of the main royal court after the death of her beloved husband.

How to reach:

Easily accessible by taking a short local bajaj (tuk-tuk) or private taxi ride from downtown Gondar.

Best time to visit:

Year-round, with the dry winter months offering the most pleasant weather for exploring the outdoor stone ruins.

Best time of day:

Late afternoon around 4:00 PM to watch the sun set over the surrounding hills and paint the old stone walls in golden light.

Entry fee:

Entry is covered by your main Fasil Ghebbi ticket, or you can purchase a separate site ticket at the entrance for approximately ETB 100.

Commute difficulty:

Easy; a short, comfortable drive from the city center followed by a brief walk up a gentle hill path.

Things nobody tells you about this place:

  • The resident monk at the Kuskuam church will often show you the historic, glass-fronted casket containing the skeletal remains of Empress Mentewab and her royal family.
  • This site is highly uncommercialized and rarely visited by tour buses, making it the perfect spot for quiet photography and reading.
  • Bring a small flashlight if you want to explore some of the dark, interior stone chambers and storage cellars under the palace.
