The Upper Lake, locally known as Bada Talab, is an 11th century artificial reservoir built by Raja Bhoj and remains one of the defining landmarks of Bhopal city. Spanning about 31 square kilometres, it is among India’s oldest continuously used water bodies and continues to serve as a primary water source for the Bhopal capital. For visitors exploring Bhopal in which district, the lake lies at the heart of Bhopal district and shapes much of the city’s identity. A scenic promenade called VIP Road runs along its edge, making it a popular spot for boating, evening walks and picnics. Adjacent to the lake is Van Vihar National Park, a 445 hectare zoo sanctuary that houses rescued tigers, leopards and sloth bears in spacious enclosures. The Upper Lake and Van Vihar together form an ideal half day circuit within Bhopal city.
